What is Mullein Oil?

Mullein, also known as the velvet plant due to its velvety texture, is native to both Asia and the Mediterranean region. This hardy plant has been used for centuries in traditional medicine for a variety of purposes, particularly for treating respiratory ailments such as cough relief. Mullein oil has also been employed to alleviate ear problems such as infections and earaches, as well as fungal infections like athlete's foot and ringworm.

What is Mullein Oil?

Mullein oil derives from Verbascum thapsus, or common mullein. This essential oil's hue is similar to olive oil and the fragrant aroma is comparable to nutmeg. Associations with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, tranquilizing and relaxing properties make mullein oil a popularly used essential oil. Its properties are comprised of rotenone, coumarin, triterpene saponins like mucilage, flavonoids and a range of other phytochemicals.

Mullein oil is known for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties. It has been used commercially in ear drops as a home remedy for earaches and ear infections; it is believed to help relieve the pain of earaches. A study conducted in 171 children between the ages 5 to 18 demonstrated that mullein oil drops were effective in relieving earache pain and were less expensive than antibiotics with no reported side effects.
